So that's a provocative headline, but the bottom line is that that US administrations has sheltered Israel from a lot of heat at the UN in the past ... and I'm sure Obama could have blocked this UN Fact-Finding Mission on the Gaza Flotilla, part I. Am I wrong?
The Huntington Post summarizes: The report of the fact-finding mission of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on the Israeli attack on the Gaza flotilla released last week shows conclusively, for the first time, that US citizen Furkan Dogan and five Turkish citizens were murdered execution-style by Israeli commandos.
The report reveals that Dogan, the 19-year-old US citizen of Turkish descent, was filming with a small video camera on the top deck of the Mavi Marmara when he was shot twice in the head, once in the back and in the left leg and foot and that he was shot in the face at point blank range while lying on the ground.
Clearly ... this is not good PR for Israel - but is it a sort of clandestine result for Netanyahu having NOT extending the Settlement Freeze on the West Bank? Is turning a blind eye at the UN Obama's loan guarantees (as the H. W. Bush Administration dropped as a measure of pressure on Israel)?
It's starting to look like it. And so is my next question: If Obama is re-elected for a second term, what else might he be willing to do to "get tough" with the Israelis? Might he feel the security of not having to run for re-election and take off the gloves ... say, with military aid?
Only time shall tell.
Update: A researcher tied with pro-Israeli American adviser, Dennis Ross, has published a paper saying that Obama would have "given Israel cover" at the UN in exchange for a 2-month extension on settlements. Oops. Too bad for Bibi & his coalition ... sounds like a really good deal for Israel, and all who believe in Zionism finding peace with the Arabs.
